Family-owned Somalian eatery serving generous platters of slow-spiced goat, tender beef suqaar, hand-folded sambusas & more — halal, hearty, and home-cooked.
Jubba Somali Restaurant is a family-owned East African eatery nestled in San Jose's Blossom Hill neighborhood, conveniently located just steps from the VTA light rail station at 5330 Terner Way. From our nondescript storefront, we serve some of the most authentic Somali flavors in all of the Bay Area.
Every dish at Jubba is prepared with the same care a Somali mother puts into her kitchen — layered spices, proper technique, and no shortcuts. Our portions are generous, our ingredients are fresh, and our food is 100% halal. We believe great food should bring people together, and every meal here is made with that spirit.
We're proud to be a beacon of Somali culture in the Silicon Valley. Whether you're a longtime fan of East African cuisine or trying it for the very first time, our warm staff will make you feel welcome. High chairs are available for little ones, and we're happy to accommodate vegetarian guests too.
From slow-cooked goat to crispy sambusas, every item on our menu carries a story rooted in centuries of Somali culinary tradition.
Somali cuisine is a remarkable fusion born from centuries of trade, migration, and cultural exchange. Situated at the Horn of Africa, Somalia sat at the crossroads of Arab, Indian, Persian, Italian, and East African culinary worlds — and all of these influences are woven into every dish we prepare at Jubba.
At the heart of Somali cooking lies xawaash — a complex spice blend that varies by family but typically combines cumin, coriander, black pepper, fenugreek, cardamom, cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon. These warm, layered spices give Somali food its distinctive depth without being overwhelming. At Jubba, our spice blends are prepared in-house from time-honored family recipes.
As a traditionally pastoral culture, Somali cuisine places great emphasis on quality meat — especially goat, beef, and lamb. Suqaar, a technique of dicing and sautéing meat with vegetables and spices, produces incredibly tender, juicy morsels that pair perfectly with fragrant basmati rice. It's a dish that regulars at Jubba consistently name as the one they crave most.
Islamic dietary principles are central to Somali cuisine — all food is halal, and pork and alcohol are never present. Perhaps more importantly, Somali food culture is deeply communal. Meals are meant to be shared from large, generous platters, reflecting the warm hospitality that defines Somali society. At Jubba, we honor that tradition in every portion we serve.
One of the most distinctive features of Somali dining is eating sliced banana alongside savory rice or pasta dishes. This tradition traces back to the Italian colonial era, when banana plantations flourished in Somalia. Today it's an inseparable part of the cuisine — the cool sweetness of banana provides a beautiful contrast to the heat of the spices.
In true Somali tradition, we serve complimentary hot herbal African tea with your meal — a fragrant, spiced brew that perfectly rounds off a hearty feast. Guests consistently mention it as a highlight of the experience.
The Beef Suqaar is absolutely amazing — each piece so tender and juicy, flavored well without being overwhelming. The green sauce has a really nice creamy kick. I genuinely crave this place monthly.
Huge portions, high quality food, and GREAT prices. The chicken was cooked to perfection — so juicy and tender. The yogurt sauce in the wrap was perfect. They also had complimentary hot herbal tea!
Had Somali food for the first time with no regrets. The Tilapia Fillets were absolutely worth the price. Came back for the Beef Suqaar — absolutely amazing. Will definitely be returning.
The sambusas were my favorite — so savory and fresh with minced beef. The vegetable plate came with a green sauce that was a little spicy but very delicious. Portions were huge — enough for two people.
Chicken, beef and goat were all well spiced and delicious. Staff went out of their way to accommodate. My kids scarfed down everything! They loved watching the trains go by as we ate.
Mandazi was very flavorful and the goat very tender. Great portions. One of my favorite restaurants in San Jose! I recommend ordering ahead if you don't plan to dine-in — it can get busy.
